Recognizing Excellence in Safety - This is an excellent opportunity for recognizing OH&S champions for the great work they are doing in making healthcare a safer place to work.

There are three categories in which to nominate your co-workers:

1. The Safety Champion Award for an individual who demonstrates a commitment to health and safety.

2. The Committee of the Year Award to the OH&S Committee, which demonstrates the benefits of safety performance in their workplace.

3. The Innovative Safety Solution Award is for the committee, department or individual, which demonstrates implementation of a safety innovation that has been shown to reduce injuries.

Awards in Safety in 2008 went to the following:

The Healthcare Workplace Safety Conference III Planning Committee is pleased to announce the winners of the 2008 Healthcare Safety Awards! This is the second year for the awards and we thank everyone for nominating the employees who are making a difference in health and safety in the healthcare workplaces of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The awards and winners are as follows:

The Healthcare Occupational Health & Safety Committee of the Year 2008:

This award is presented to the OH&S Committee that demonstrates a unified commitment to health and safety in their organization. It looked at the activities and accomplishments for 2008 including the compliance, effectiveness and leadership of the committee.

Winner: St. Pats Mercy Home OHS Committee

The Healthcare Safety Champion Award 2008:

This award is presented to an individual that demonstrates a commitment towards health and safety, not only on a personal level, but looking out for co-workers as well.

Winner: Donna Sutton, Carbonear General Hospital, Eastern Health

The Healthcare Innovative Safety Solution Award 2008:

This award is presented to an individual or a representative of a group that has designed, planned, and/or implemented an innovative way to bring safety into the organization.

Winners: Employee Wellness/Health & Safety Branch and Organization Development Branch, Western Memorial Hospital.
