FLOWER'S COVE

The town of Flower’s Cove is the “hub” of the Straits area.  It is home to the local Grenfell Community Station, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Bank of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland Hydro, as well as many other retail outlets.  In early years the community was known as French Island Harbour and many local residents still refer to it as such today.  A small island adjacent to Flower’s Cove is home to one of the largest potential for tourism development in the area.

Flower’s Island Lighthouse is located on an island in the mouth of Flower’s Cove, approximately 200 meters from land.  The lighthouse was constructed in 1877 and was used as a beacon to guide vessels away from a series of shoals on the western side of the island known as “Flower’s Cove Ledges”, and for ships passing through the Strait of Belle Isle.  The light was operational until 1969; thereafter an automated light was placed on the neighboring mainland.

Canon J.T. Richards brought religion to many of the locals.  He was resident at the local Anglican Church for 42 years.  The local regional high school bears his name today.

The Anglican Church in the community has been declared a historical landmark.  It was built in 1920.  In order to construct the church the women of the day sold sealskin boots to pay for materials.  It is locally referred to as the “Seal Skin Boot Church”.
