Recruitment and Retention Fund for Nurses

A Commitment to Health Human Resource Planning In Newfoundland and Labrador

 

The Department of Health and Community Services is committed to health human resource planning including the development of initiatives to assist with the recruitment and retention of nurses.  Listed below are the wide range of initiatives that are funded by the Department of Health and Community Services, as well as information on application forms and policies.

 

Bachelor of Nursing Practice Course Grant  

This grant  provides financial assistance with tuition and practice related expenses for two clinical courses.

            Deadline:    

One month prior to start of course

            Amount: 

$750 for each course

            Eligibility

This policy applies to students enrolled in the following courses in Newfoundland and Labrador:

-    NURS 3523 Extended Practice III

-    NURS 4516 Consolidated Practicum

Bachelor of Nursing Bursary

Bachelor of Nursing Bursaries provide financial assistance to students of the Bachelor of Nursing (Collaborative) Program.

            Deadline:    

January 31st of each fiscal year or three months prior to program completion, whichever occurs first. The deadline for fast track students is June 30th of each year, or three months prior to program completion, whichever occurs first.

            Amount: 

Each bursary of $2,500 per academic year has a one year (1950 hours) service agreement with a regional health authority.                    

            Eligibility: 

Students enrolled in either year three or year four of the Bachelor of Nursing (Collaborative) Program

Students enrolled in year one or year two of the Fast Track option of the Bachelor of Nursing (Collaborative) Program

Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador who are enrolled in the last two years of a Bachelor of Nursing program in another Canadian jurisdiction

A $2,500 bursary is available per each academic year as indicated above, to a maximum of $5,000.  Students may receive a maximum of $2,500 in their first eligible year. If the student does not receive funding in the first eligible year, the full $5,000 may be received in the second year

Rural Nursing Student Incentive Program

The objective of the Rural Nursing Student Incentive Program is to provide travel-related funding assistance (up to $1,500) to nursing students in their fourth year of studies to undertake community placements in rural areas of the province during their four-week course: 4512 - Community Health Practicum.  Funds are forwarded from the Department of Health and Community Services to the Memorial University School of Nursing; the Memorial University School of Nursing is responsible for the administration of these funds.

 

Registered Nurse Relocation Allowance

Financial support for relocation is available through regional health authorities.  This allowance has a minimum one year service agreement with a regional health authority.

 

Retention Bonus

Labrador-Grenfell Health offers a retention bonus of $5,000 for Regional Nurses working in coastal communities and Forteau.  Please contact Labrador-Grenfell Health for more information.

 

Grant for the Registered Nurse (RN) Re-Entry Program

The Grant for the RN Re-Entry  Program provides nurses enrolled in the RN Re-Entry Program a $2,500 grant.  In return for this assistance, the recipient must commit to one year of worked service as a RN with a regional health authority in Newfoundland and Labrador upon completion of the RN Re-Entry Program.

Deadline: January 31st or 3 months prior to completion of the program, whichever occurs first

Grant Program for Nurse Practitioners 

The goal of this program is to provide financial assistance to nurse practitioner students in the amount of $5,000 to increase the number of nurse practitioners in Newfoundland and Labrador.  This policy applies to registered nurses enrolled in an accredited nurse practitioner program in Canada who sign a one year service agreement in Newfoundland and Labrador as a registered nurse.

Deadline: January 31st or 3 months prior to graduation, whichever occurs first

Other Initiatives

 

 

Orientation Program

 

Orientation programs for new graduates have been established in regional health authorities with provincial funding to help ease the transition to beginning practice for both registered nurses and licensed practical nurses.

 

Mentorship Program

 

Mentorship programs are available in some regional health authorities to further support integration of new graduates into beginning practice.
