Other Initiatives

Being and Becoming: The Leader Within

A Leadership Conference for Nurses

In April 2008, the Department of Health and Community Services hosted a two-day conference to provide an opportunity for licensed practical nurses and registered nurses to reflect on and enhance their clinical leadership capacity. The conference featured internationally-renowned health care professional and award winning author Dr. Timothy Porter-O'Grady, Senior Partner, Tim Porter-O'Grady Associates.  His session focused on the transformation of the leadership role with a new set of expectations.   Other topics included mentorship, building relationships, the leader in you, and taking care of you, the leader.  The conference was a huge success and received a lot of positive feedback.

Orientation Program

Orientation programs for new graduates have been established in regional health authorities with provincial funding to help ease the transition to beginning practice for both registered nurses and licensed practical nurses.

Mentorship Program

Mentorship programs are available in some regional health authorities to further support integration of new graduates into beginning practice.
